When Fear Leads, We Lose Connection

Feb 20, 2026

Sweet sister,

What if the stress and anxiety you’ve been praying away…
the tight chest you feel after meetings…
the sleepless nights replaying Sunday…
the irritability in bedtime routines...

isn’t proof that you’re spiritually failing?

What if it’s simply your body doing exactly what God designed it to do?

Your Nervous System Has a Built-In Alarm System

God created your body with an internal alert system — your nervous system. Its job is simple and protective:

Scan for safety. Protect when needed. Restore when safe.

Psalm 139:14 reminds us:

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

That includes your biology.

Your nervous system is not the enemy.
It is not weak.
It is not “too sensitive.”

It is designed.

God Designed Your Body to Scan for Safety

From the beginning, our bodies were wired to notice threat and move us toward safety. That wiring isn’t sinful — it’s protective.

But ministry can confuse that system.

Board meetings.
Congregational criticism.
Unspoken expectations.
Little ones in constant need of your attention.
Spiritual pressure to always be “on.”
Rejection of not being invited to the Galentine's party a church member hosted.

Your body may interpret these moments as threat.

And when it does, you might notice:

  • Snappy reactions

  • Defensiveness

  • Overwhelm

  • Shutting down

  • Overworking to prove your worth

That’s not random.

That’s activation.

What Fear in Ministry Can Look Like

Fear doesn’t always look like panic attacks or visible breakdowns.

Sometimes it looks like being the “strong one.”

Fear in ministry can look like:

  • Overcommitting so no one is disappointed

  • Replaying conversations for hours

  • Taking feedback as rejection

  • Feeling responsible for everyone’s emotions

  • Smiling publicly while unraveling privately

Underneath it all, your nervous system is asking one question:

“Am I safe?”

When Fear Leads, We Disconnect

When we live in chronic activation, something subtle happens.

We disconnect.

Fear disconnects us from:

🌿 Peace
🌿 Secure attachment to God
🌿 Our true self in Christ

We shift into performance instead of presence.
We strive instead of abide.

But Scripture tells us:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

A “sound mind” isn’t just theological clarity.

It’s internal steadiness.
It’s nervous system regulation.
It’s the ability to remain rooted in love, connected to Jesus, even when ministry feels shaky.

The Check Engine Light Isn’t Shame

When your chest tightens after a board meeting…
When you can’t sleep replaying Sunday…
When you feel invisible or criticized…

That isn’t weakness.

That’s your check engine light.

And the check engine light isn’t condemnation.

It’s invitation.

An invitation to pause.
An invitation to regulate.
An invitation to align your thoughts and fears with God's truth.
An invitation to reattach to Jesus.

Jesus said:

“Abide in me, and I in you.” — John 15:4

He never said, “Perform for me.”
He never said, “Prove yourself.”

He said, abide.

The Good Ministry Life Is Not About Trying Harder

You don’t need more spiritual pressure.

You need reconnection.

The Good Ministry Life is not about trying harder spiritually.

It’s about learning how to:

✔️ Recognize when fear is leading
✔️ Regulate your body instead of overriding it
✔️ Reattach to Jesus in secure connection
✔️ Live rooted in love instead of performance

When your body feels safe, your soul can rest.
When your nervous system is regulated, your heart can respond instead of react.
When you’re securely attached to God, you don’t need everyone else’s approval to feel steady.

Living Rooted in Love

Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).

But love isn’t just a theological concept.
It’s an embodied experience.

It looks like:

  • Responding instead of snapping

  • Setting boundaries without guilt

  • Receiving feedback without spiraling

  • Sleeping peacefully

  • Leading from overflow instead of exhaustion

Healthy churches start with healthy leaders.

And healthy leaders are not the ones who never feel anxiety.

They’re the ones who recognize the signal…
and return to the Vine.

If You’ve Been Living on Edge…

This is your sign.

Your check engine light is not weakness.

It’s wisdom.

It’s your body inviting you back to peace.
Back to secure attachment.
Back to your true self in Christ.
Back to the Vine.

And sister, you don’t have to figure this out alone. We'd love to walk this journey with you back to being rooted in love, deeply connected to The Vine so you can step into the greatness God created for you! A life of peace is waiting for you!

We offer coaching for Christian women, as well as our coaching, mentorship and discipleship community The Vine!

🌿 The 10-Week Spring Cohort inside The Vine opens soon for pastors wives.

This is where we gently learn to shift from fear to love — spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and physically — so you can lead from peace, not pressure.

You were never meant to white-knuckle ministry.

You were meant to abide.

And you are not behind. You are becoming. 🌿
