A New Year, a New Rhythm: How Scripture Writing Changed Everything for Me

Jan 01, 2026

There’s something about the beginning of a new year that invites reflection. We look ahead with hope, but we also quietly ask ourselves: What needs to change? What needs to be nurtured? What kind of pace do I want to live at this year?

For me, one of the most impactful shifts I’ve ever made — especially as I entered a new season — was beginning the practice of Scripture writing.

It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t complicated. And it certainly didn’t require a perfect routine. But it became one of the most grounding, life-giving rhythms in my walk with Christ.

What Is Scripture Writing?

Scripture writing is simply the practice of slowing down to write out God’s Word by hand. Verse by verse. Line by line. Sometimes a single Scripture, sometimes several.

At first glance, it may seem small or even unnecessary — after all, we can read Scripture quickly or listen to it on the go. But there is something deeply different about writing God’s Word.

It forces us to slow down.
It anchors our attention.
It creates space for God to speak.

How Scripture Writing Deepens Our Walk With Christ

One of the greatest gifts of Scripture writing is how it moves God’s Word from our heads to our hearts.

When we write Scripture, we’re not rushing past familiar verses. We’re lingering. We’re noticing words we may have skipped over dozens of times before. We’re allowing truth to gently confront our fears, reframe our thoughts, and remind us of who God is — and who we are in Him.

Over time, Scripture writing becomes less about doing a spiritual discipline and more about meeting with God. It cultivates intimacy. It creates consistency without pressure. And it invites us to listen, not just consume.

The Physical and Emotional Benefits of Slowing Down

What surprised me most was how much Scripture writing impacted me beyond my spiritual life.

In a world that constantly pushes us to move faster, think harder, and do more, Scripture writing became a form of rest.

Physically, it slows the nervous system. Writing by hand engages the body in a calm, rhythmic way. Our breathing deepens. Our shoulders relax. Our minds settle.

Emotionally, it creates a sense of safety and grounding. When we sit with God’s Word, we’re reminded that we are held, guided, and never alone. Anxiety softens. Overwhelm quiets. Peace becomes accessible — not because life suddenly changes, but because our posture does.

Scripture writing became one of the simplest ways I learned to rest in God’s presence.

A Gentle Invitation for This New Year

As you step into this new year, I want to gently invite you to consider what rhythms you’re building your life around.

What if, instead of striving for more, you chose to slow down?
What if, instead of trying harder, you leaned deeper into God’s Word?
What if just a few intentional minutes a day became sacred ground?

You don’t need perfection. You don’t need long quiet mornings. You don’t need to “do it right.” You only need a willing heart and an open Bible.

If you’d like to join us, I’d love to invite you into our monthly Scripture Writing journey. Each month, you’ll receive a curated set of Scriptures designed to help you slow down, renew your mind, and rest in God’s presence — one verse at a time.

This year doesn’t have to be about doing more.
It can be about abiding deeper.

And sometimes, the smallest practices make the biggest difference.
