A Letter to the Pastor's Wife Who Wants to Quit

Apr 09, 2026

A Letter to the Pastor’s Wife

Dear Pastor’s Wife,

I hear you.

And I want you to know… your feelings make sense.

Of course you’re tired.

Look at the weight you’ve been carrying:

  • The pressure to be everything to everyone
  • The fear of being misunderstood
  • The tension of wanting to be real but feeling like you can’t
  • The constant awareness that your life is being observed, evaluated, and discussed

That is not a light load.

And somewhere along the way, the thoughts started piling up:

“This isn’t fair.”
“No matter what I do, it’s not enough.”
“I can’t be myself here.”
“They don’t respect us.”
“I didn’t sign up for this.”

And those thoughts… they’re heavy.

Not because you’re weak.
But because you were never meant to carry them alone—or for this long.

What you’re feeling isn’t just about the church.

It’s about the internal weight of:

  • Unmet expectations
  • Unspoken disappointments
  • Unprocessed hurt
  • Unprotected boundaries

It’s the emotional and mental load that leads to burnout long before you ever step away physically.

So if you’re craving space…
If you’re thinking about stepping back…
If your soul is whispering, “I need a break”…

That doesn’t make you unfaithful.

It makes you aware.

But here’s what I want you to gently consider:

Before you make any big decisions from a place of exhaustion…
Pause long enough to tend to your heart.

Because the answer isn’t just distance from the church—
It’s freedom from the weight you’ve been carrying inside.

You are allowed to:

  • Set boundaries
  • Say no
  • Be honest
  • Be human
  • Not meet every expectation placed on you

You are not called to perform a role.
You are called to abide in Christ.

And from that place… everything else flows.

You don’t have to keep living under the pressure of:
“Who they expect me to be.”

You get to live from:
“Who God says I am.”

And that version of you?
She is not exhausted from striving.

She is anchored in truth.
Grounded in identity.
Free to serve without losing herself.

So take the break if you need to.
Rest if your body and soul are asking for it.

But don’t forget this:

You don’t need to quit who God created you to be
in order to survive where He has called you.

There is a healthier way to live this out.

And you don’t have to find it alone. There's space for you with us here inside The Vine.

To the Church and to Her…

When we build environments rooted in grace instead of pressure…
When we choose honor over expectation…
When we make space for people to be human…

We don’t just retain leaders.

We restore them.

And that changes everything.
